Osteoporosis
Osteoporosis is characterised by a generalised and progressive loss of bone mass, which leads to increased fragility of the bone. This leads to increased fracture rates (wrist, vertebral body and femoral neck fractures) sometimes with minor trauma.
Women 50 years of age and older have a 40 per cent risk of osteoporosis-related bone fracture, while the risk for men is 10 per cent. It is estimated that although 30 percent of affected individuals are diagnosed with osteoporosis, only 15 percent are treated for the condition. It is therefore essential to diagnose osteoporosis at an early stage and to treat it correctly.
Our osteoporosis team also performs body composition assessments. This provides an accurate measure of body fat and muscle mass. These measurements are particularly useful for sports medicine and for endocrine consultations.
